About the Artist
Lin Chen-Long was born in 1955 in Lugu, Nantou County. He began working with clay in 1973 at the Han Tang ceramics factory under Wang Xiu-Gong, studied glazes with Lin Pao-Chia, often called the father of modern Taiwanese ceramics, from 1978, and in 1979 founded the Tsu Yang Kiln in Tucheng, New Taipei. His studio name, Er-Gu ("second valley"), speaks of a low place looking up at the mountains, which is why he calls his workshop the Jingshan Pottery Studio, the studio that reveres the mountain.
Over three decades more than two hundred painters and calligraphers came to the Tsu Yang Kiln to work on ceramics, making it one of the key meeting points between ceramists and painters in Taiwan. Since 1989 Lin has shown his own work in a long run of solo exhibitions, among them Firing Clay, Firing Heart; Embracing My Earth; Beyond the Teapot; Space and Glaze; Forms and Colours of the Earth; and Stone Texture, Clay Life. His work has been exhibited at the National Museum of History, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Yingge Ceramics Museum, the Zhejiang Art Museum, the China Ceramics Museum in Jingdezhen, the Yixing Ceramics Museum, the Shanglinhu Yue Kiln Celadon Museum in Zhejiang and the City University of New York, among others.
Lin's work brings the minimal geometry of Western formalism together with the glazes of the East. Geometric blocks, cylinders and small bowls build compositions of solid and void, while celadon, copper red, Jun and white glazes give those rational structures a softer, warmer surface. In recent years he has been firing raw stone and clay together, which led to the Stone Texture and Glaze Carving series.
